Yesterday
In September 1917, Mother Rice Playground was opened. This site was the gift from the children and grandchildren of Mary Sophia Rice, lovingly known as Mother Rice, in celebration of the centennial of her birth, as well as to commemorate her missionary work in Moiliili. In 1918, Miss Ester Kopke volunteered to start a morning kindergarten in the large pavilion at the site. Much of the success of the Mother Rice Playground and School was due to the hard work of an amazingly strong Mothers’ Club. Meetings were held twice a month and because the meetings were held in English and Japanese, there was high attendance. By 1923, they had raised enough funds to build a new school for the children.
